Sorry, this item has sold.

Mid century copper "Ubangi Face" brooch created in the 1940s by Francisco Rebajes and is one of his favourite pieces. The brooch is in excellent condition, it appears to have been well taken care of and worn very little. The patina has little to no change and the structure is great. The hoop earrings have kept their round shape, something you don't see on many of these pieces. The original locking c-clasp pin is in working order. The piece is stamped "Rebajes" on the back at the base of the neck. The pin measures about 3 1/4 inches tall x 2 1/2 inches wide (earring to earring). A truly beautiful statement piece and part of American art history. When you own Rebajes, you own a piece of Wearable Art.

About Francisco Rebajes (1905-1990):
Francisco "Frank" Rebajes was among the first craft jewelers in Greenwich Village, New York City. Rebajes came to New York in 1922 at the age of 16 from the Dominican Republic. In 1932 while living in a basement apartment with his new wife he created a collection of animals from tin cans by using an old set of plumbers' tools. He displayed those sculptures on an ironing board at the first Washington Square outdoor show. This showing ended up with Juliana R. Force, the director of the Whitney Museum, buying all of Rebajes pieces. Rebajes opened his first store in Greenwich Village in 1934. With gaining success and popularity in the 1950's, Rebajes opened a modern & elaborate store on 5th Avenue. Rebajes worked with a range of materials though he is best known for his work in copper. Rebajes ran the business until 1967, when he moved to Spain. In Spain Rebajes continued to make some jewellery until the late 80s though he was more interested in creating sculptures. Rebajes's wife passed away in 1988, sadly he took his own life in 1990. Francisco Rebajes was a man of great vision and accomplishments, he is now recognized as one of the founders of the American Wearable Art Movement, an important movement in the history of American art. Rebajes' timeless designs and impeccable craftsmanship have his works displayed in museums around the world.
